What Are PRP Injections Used For?

One of the state-of-the-art treatments we offer at Lubbock Advanced Physical Medicine is platelet-rich plasma injections, often referred to as simply PRP injections.  The objective of this therapy is fostering the natural ability of the body to heal itself.  With PRP therapy Lubbock patients are able to enjoy restored health, normal function, and comfort without resorting to surgery.

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP therapy is a component of regenerative medicine.  This type of medicine focuses on helping your body repair tissues and reduces inflammation and chronic pain naturally.  Healthcare professionals consider it an alternative to removing damaged or diseased tissue or transplanting tissue from a donor.

A PRP injection is an all-natural technique that can go hand-in-hand with chiropractic therapies, massage, corrective exercises, and other non-invasive treatments.  Understanding the role that platelets play is important in understanding how PRP therapy works and how it might benefit you. Platelets reside in blood plasma and are loaded with many important proteins, some of which are called growth factors.  These factors are responsible for causing tissue to grow, heal, and regenerate by producing cartilage and proteins.

The denser the platelet concentration in an affected part of the body, the more effective it can self-heal.  Individuals with chronic degenerative or progressive conditions could experience tissue damage faster than the body can heal itself. With PRP therapy Lubbock patients receive a concentration of their own plasma injected directly into the site requiring treatment.  This concentration has up to 10 times as many platelets as those found in an individual’s blood.

These injections are effective for a number of conditions, such as:

  • Tendon problems
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Strained muscles
  • Ligament damage
  • Torn muscles
  • Inflammation
  • Accidents
  • Recovery from surgery
  • Other types of sports injuries

Regenerative Medicine and PRP Therapy in Lubbock

The path to wellness begins with a thorough assessment by our doctor of chiropractic.  This includes a physical exam, a discussion of the patient’s medical history, and a review of the individual’s symptoms and complaints.  At the initial consultation, our doctor will evaluate each patient as a candidate for this type of regenerative medicine.  Suffering from anemia or cancer or having abnormal platelets could rule out the use of PRP therapy.

Treatment begins by extracting blood and separating its various components in a centrifuge.  After concentration of the plasma, we return the enriched plasma to the patient via injection into the affected area to promote tissue regrowth and recovery.

Initial benefits of this procedure usually begin about two weeks after the injection.  Many individuals note that their improvement continues to increase for as long as nine months.

Soreness after an injection is typically just an inflammatory response that disappears after a few days.  For many individuals who visit our clinic, a treatment plan includes injections along with other types of therapy and enables them to avoid a major surgery.
