If you’ve been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and are experiencing pain, we may be able to help. At Lubbock Advanced Physical Medicine, we treat a wide variety of conditions in a supportive and caring environment.

What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition of the fifth cranial nerve, which encompasses most of the interior of the skull. The pain caused by this condition is due to the irritation of the nerve. When it comes in contact with a healthy artery or vein at the base of the brain, it can place pressure and cause the nerve to misfire. Sometimes the cause is due to the pressure of a tumor on the nerve or multiple sclerosis (MS), which causes damage to the myelin sheaths. The disorder typically occurs in individuals over the age of 50, but it can strike at any age. When it occurs much younger, it is usually the results of MS.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia

Pain from trigeminal neuralgia typically involves the lower face and jaw and sometimes affects the area around the nose and eyes. It causes an electric shock type of pain that is said to be one of the most excruciating nerve pains. The pain is often described as intensely sharp, throbbing and usually triggered by touching an area of the skin or specific activities like washing, shaving and blowing the nose.

How Chiropractic Treatment Helps

Unfortunately, trigeminal neuralgia can’t always be cured, but there are several treatments available that can reduce the pain or limit the occurrence. Your chiropractor can make adjustments to reduce the pressure on the nerves.
